HEALTH

đŸ‘‰As the saying goes, health is the root of all happiness. Health is the most valuable asset of a human being. A person's happiness depends on their health. Money, success, fame, honor, influence and prestige are all meaningless to a man of broken health.

As Earth’s temperature rises, so do deaths among people with mental health problems

The worsening climate crisis has dire consequences for various groups of people. While we are aware of the impact on farmers and those who lose their homes to wildfires, there is another group that faces a potentially lethal threat - individuals with mental health problems such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or anxiety.

Unfortunately, this threat has already become a reality for some. A study conducted in March revealed that during a record-breaking heat wave in British Columbia in June 2021, 8% of individuals who died from the extreme heat had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Surprisingly, this disorder posed a greater risk factor than other conditions studied, including kidney disease and coronary artery disease.

Dr. Robert Feder, a retired psychiatrist and representative of the American Psychiatric Association, emphasized that until climate change is effectively addressed, the situation will only worsen. As temperatures continue to rise, the effects will be amplified, leading to more storms, fires, and heightened concerns about potential disasters.

Numerous studies have also found a correlation between rising temperatures and suicide attempts, as well as increased rates of mental health-related emergency department visits. Furthermore, long-term exposure to air pollution, which can be exacerbated by the climate crisis through droughts or wildfires, has been linked to heightened anxiety and an increase in suicides.

Experts highlight that the vulnerability of individuals with schizophrenia or other conditions to extreme heat, air pollution, and stress is influenced by various factors. Therefore, they require support from loved ones, surrounding communities, and policymakers.
