HEALTH

ðŸ‘‰As the saying goes, health is the root of all happiness. Health is the most valuable asset of a human being. A person's happiness depends on their health. Money, success, fame, honor, influence and prestige are all meaningless to a man of broken health.

The reasons why GPs fail to diagnose life-threatening illnesses

The first misconception is that age determines the likelihood of having cancer. David Chapman, at the age of 29, experienced abdominal pains and sought medical help. Despite being treated for kidney stones, he was later diagnosed with a rare aggressive form of bladder cancer, which sadly led to his death six months later. It is important to note that cancer is more commonly diagnosed in individuals in their 70s and beyond, making it less likely for someone in their late twenties, like David Chapman, to be suspected of having cancer.

Another misleading assumption is when medical tests fail to identify any underlying health issues. Jane Spencer's husband complained of stomach pains, poor appetite, and weight loss, which are symptoms that could suggest bowel cancer. However, a colonoscopy performed by a specialist did not reveal any abnormalities, leading to the conclusion that there was nothing wrong. Unfortunately, a subsequent kidney bleed revealed a large tumor that had already spread, resulting in a fatal prognosis. In this case, the false reassurance of normal colonoscopies and the limited focus on the specialist's area of expertise hindered further investigation.

The third misconception is exemplified by Joanne Messenger's husband, who visited his doctor multiple times over five years with symptoms of acid reflux and excessive tiredness. Despite undergoing various blood tests, his symptoms were attributed to a vitamin D deficiency. When he started coughing, he was prescribed cough medicines and later steroids. However, it seems that his doctor may have believed that extensive investigations had already been conducted, leading to a delay in requesting a chest X-ray. Unfortunately, the X-ray confirmed advanced cancer in both his lungs and stomach.

It is crucial for doctors to be aware of the dangers of being misled by such assumptions. Medical professionals should remain vigilant and consider all possibilities, even when initial tests or symptoms may suggest otherwise.
