Which diet is more effective for weight loss: vegan or omnivorous?

 


A recent study provides further evidence supporting the effectiveness of a vegan diet for weight loss. The study compared two groups of individuals, one following a vegan diet and the other following an omnivorous diet that included both plant and animal sources.

The researchers also found that the quality of the plant-based diet played a significant role in weight loss and overall health. The study concluded that following a plant-based diet is more closely associated with weight loss for overweight adults compared to a standard omnivorous diet. Additionally, the study emphasized that the quality of the plant-based diet is crucial in determining the amount of weight lost.

During the study, participants who followed a vegan diet lost an average of 5.9 kilograms (13 pounds), regardless of the quality of their diet.

To assess the different types of plant-based diets, the researchers utilized three commonly used indices. These indices allowed them to evaluate a healthy plant-based diet (hPDI), an unhealthy plant-based diet (uPDI), and a general plant-based diet (PDI).

This study was a secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial that investigated the effects of a low-fat vegan diet on body weight, insulin sensitivity, postprandial metabolism, and lipid levels in overweight adults.

A total of 244 overweight adults participated in the trial. The researchers assigned 122 individuals to the vegan-diet group, while the remaining 122 were placed in the control group and instructed to continue their normal omnivorous eating habits. Ultimately, 223 participants completed the 16-week trial.

Throughout the trial, participants recorded their dietary intake for three days at the beginning and end of the 16-week period. They were allowed to choose their own foods and did not receive any nutritional guidance.

The researchers re-analyzed the participants' dietary records, assigning positive scores to all plant-based foods in the PDI index. The hPDI index only awarded positive scores to healthy plant-based foods, while the uPDI index assigned positive scores to unhealthy foods.

As the trial progressed, the number of participants belonging to all three plant-based indices increased, and these scores were closely correlated with weight loss.

Overall, the study highlights the benefits of a plant-based diet for weight loss, with the quality of the diet playing a significant role in achieving successful outcomes.

The study's findings indicate that certain food components, such as whole grains and legumes, were associated with weight loss in the vegan group, while meat, vegetable oils, and sweets were linked to weight gain in the control group. The study's strengths include its randomized design, accounting for seasonal effects, and the identification of specific food components related to weight loss. This information was provided by Menka Gupta, a representative from Nutra Nourish, who was not involved in the study. Michelle Routhenstein, a registered dietitian nutritionist, also not involved in the research, mentioned that any diet can lead to weight loss when a caloric deficit is present, so these findings are not entirely new. Previous research has generally supported the study's conclusions, with a 2022 study showing that a healthy plant-based diet is associated with a reduced risk of obesity, coronary heart disease, and colorectal cancer. Avery Zenker, a representative from EverFlex Personal Training, who was not involved in the study, emphasized the importance of diet quality in achieving positive health outcomes. Both the vegan and control groups consumed less energy during the study, but only the vegan group experienced weight loss. It is suggested that some individuals in the vegan group may have reduced their caloric intake due to uncertainty about what to eat, rather than the quality of their food choices. Stephanie Wells, from Thyme to Go Vegan, who was not involved in the study, highlighted the significant finding that most of the participants' weight loss was from body fat and pro-inflammatory visceral fat, rather than muscle. This is encouraging as maintaining muscle mass during weight loss can be challenging without a resistance training program and a high-protein diet.

Routhenstein stated that the healthful plant-based index defines a nourishing plant-based diet as being centered around whole foods like nuts, legumes, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, tea, coffee, and vegetable oils.

According to Herrington, vegetables are abundant in prebiotic fiber, which supports the health of the microbiome and digestive system. Additionally, they contain various phytochemicals such as indoles, which can be found in broccoli and Brussels sprouts. These phytochemicals offer a range of benefits, from protecting cellular DNA to deactivating carcinogens that we are exposed to in our environment.

Herrington also emphasized that fruits are a potent source of antioxidants. These phytochemicals, including compounds like ellagic acid, have the ability to reduce the risk of certain cancers. Furthermore, legumes, nuts, and seeds provide essential amino acids, while whole grains offer B vitamins and trace minerals like manganese and copper.

👉What are unhealthy plant-based foods?


Gupta highlighted that plant-based foods that are unhealthy can encompass heavily processed products such as vegan burgers or sugar-sweetened snacks. These products often contain added sugars and unhealthy fats like trans fats or over-saturated fats.

Moreover, she mentioned that high-fructose and low-sugar versions of these foods may have fewer nutrients compared to unprocessed whole-plant foods. Some of these processed options may also contain artificial additives, preservatives, and flavorings.

Interestingly, the experienced vegan revealed a "dirty little secret" about junk foods being vegan. Many of these unhealthy snacks fall under the category of "plant-based" but are not necessarily the most healthful choices. For instance, Oreos and potato chips are technically plant-based.

Another concern lies in commercial oils. These vegetable oils are rich in omega-6 fatty acids, which are essential for normal inflammatory immune responses. However, excessive consumption of these oils can lead to an overly pro-inflammatory state in the body.

Furthermore, low-quality plant-based foods often contain excessive amounts of sugar as an ingredient.

Wells emphasized the significance of acknowledging that, in relation to this particular study, it is not possible to definitively determine that the plant-based diet was superior to the omnivorous control group in terms of weight loss.

Wells stated that a direct comparison between the vegan and control groups cannot be made due to the diets not being matched in terms of calorie content. However, the study did indicate that plant-based diets with varying nutrient density can be effective for individuals aiming to lose weight.

Zenker pointed out that it is rare for a single study to establish causation, while Gupta highlighted that the study recognizes limitations such as reliance on self-reported diet records and the voluntary participation of individuals.
