Getting Checked
What is the recommended frequency for women to see an OB-GYN and what are the reasons for it?
It is recommended that women between the ages of 21-65 see an OB-GYN annually. However, those who are at high risk for cancer should be seen more frequently, such as those with a family history of female cancer or abnormal Pap tests. During these visits, we screen for all female cancers, review pregnancy risk, and discuss contraception options. Additionally, we can identify high-risk syndromes and hormonal abnormalities through genetic screening. Pap tests are typically done starting at age 21, but younger patients should be seen for abnormal bleeding or pain, sexually transmitted disease screening, and hormonal problems. Women over 65 are no longer recommended to receive Pap tests, but breast and pelvic exams are still necessary. Asymptomatic women should have these exams every two years, and more frequently if they experience pain or bleeding, according to Medicare recommendations.
Skin Care
We have made significant advancements in skincare over the years, moving beyond traditional cleansers and lotions. Thanks to new technologies, we now have the ability to conduct thorough skin diagnoses and offer a wide range of innovative treatments. At SKN BAR RX in Pewaukee and Shorewood, we begin by using the Observ 520x to scan and analyze a new patient's skin. This device allows us to identify various textures and issues, from the surface level to deeper layers, including sun damage and color variations. Based on the patient's goals and lifestyle, we create a customized treatment plan to achieve the desired results. Our treatment options are extensive, ranging from chemical peels with no downtime to laser hair removal, microdermabrasion facials, microneedling, and more. One of our most popular treatments is the SKN BAR Signature Facial, which utilizes Ultraceutical Sonophoresis ultrasound to deeply cleanse the skin layers, followed by a chemical peel and mask. Additionally, we offer a line of skincare products and provide personalized recommendations for the best routine based on each patient's skin profile.
Eye Care
Eye care experts were consulted regarding the most prevalent eye issues faced by women. According to Michael Raciti, MD, from Eye Care Specialists, women are 66% more susceptible to vision impairment compared to men due to biological factors and longer lifespans. This increased risk can lead to various consequences such as car accidents, falls, hip fractures, nursing home placement, and even death. Dr. Raciti further elaborates on four common conditions that pose a threat to eyesight.
One of these conditions is cataracts, which result in clouding of the natural lens inside the eye, causing blurriness and glare. The recommended treatment for cataracts involves surgical removal of the affected lens and restoring vision through a prescription implant.
Another condition that can affect women's eyesight is diabetes, which can lead to the deterioration of blood vessels that nourish the retina. Symptoms of this condition can range from nothing at all to experiencing floaters, blurriness, and dark spots. In order to prevent blindness, treatment for diabetes-related eye issues typically involves in-eye medication injections to inhibit abnormal vessel growth.
Glaucoma, on the other hand, is often associated with increased eye fluid pressure, which can damage the optic nerve's ability to transmit information to the brain. In its early stages, glaucoma may not exhibit any noticeable symptoms. However, if left untreated, it can eventually lead to "tunneling" vision and blindness. Treatment for glaucoma usually involves the use of prescription drops and/or laser or surgical procedures.
