New studies have revealed that regular marijuana use may pose a threat to heart and brain health, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure and stroke. These findings highlight the importance of comprehensive research and awareness among healthcare providers regarding the potential risks associated with cannabis use. As more people in the U.S. turn to marijuana for medical and recreational purposes, it is crucial to understand the potential health implications. Two separate studies have shown that daily marijuana use can raise the risk of heart failure by about one-third, even after accounting for other factors, and significantly increase the risk of major acute heart or brain events in older people with Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. These preliminary studies will be presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2023, a premier global exchange of the latest scientific advancements in cardiovascular science.
