Candy enthusiasts, sour confections that you adore may possess some concealed health advantages. As if we required another incentive to indulge in sugary treats, there are claims that sour candy can assist individuals undergoing a panic attack.
In a viral TikTok video, @taylor.talking revealed that her therapist advised her to consume a Warhead candy when she senses a panic attack approaching.
"And let me emphasize, I have never experienced anything that swiftly pulled me out of the clutches of a panic attack," she expressed. This account was initially reported by USA Today, who sought the opinions of several experts. Catherine Del Toro, a mental health counselor, informed USA Today that there is certainly truth and scientific basis behind consuming sour or spicy candy to alleviate anxiety and panic attacks. She further explained that this is a common "therapy hack" since sour candy is convenient to carry. Del Toro even keeps a jar of Warheads in her office.
According to Mayo Clinic, panic attacks often occur abruptly and can manifest various symptoms such as perspiration, rapid heartbeat, trembling, queasiness, and chest discomfort. Del Toro suggests that consuming something sour (or even spicy) can help anchor oneself in the present moment, ultimately reducing and terminating the panic attack.
However, Del Toro emphasizes that sour candy is not a solution for panic attacks or anxiety, but rather a method to alleviate symptoms momentarily.
"Please do not anticipate this to cure or heal the trauma that triggers panic attacks," she cautioned USA Today.
