HEALTH

ðŸ‘‰As the saying goes, health is the root of all happiness. Health is the most valuable asset of a human being. A person's happiness depends on their health. Money, success, fame, honor, influence and prestige are all meaningless to a man of broken health.

As the age at which Americans choose to become pregnant increases, can the healthcare system adequately meet their needs?

A rising proportion of individuals are choosing to conceive in their late 20s, 30s, and even 40s. However, it remains uncertain whether the United States is adequately prepared, both medically and socially, to support older individuals who are becoming parents for the first time. This article was published in collaboration with USA Today.

Initially, Sara Toups believed that the symptoms she was experiencing were early signs of menopause. She had sore breasts and felt discomfort due to bloating in her belly. She began to question whether she had missed her period. Shouldn't it have arrived weeks ago?

At the age of 44, Toups assumed that the possibility of pregnancy was long gone. She had come to terms with it. As a former special education teacher, she had never earned enough money and had never been in the right relationship to feel confident about having a child.

However, after returning home to New Orleans from a cruise in May, Toups found herself taking pregnancy tests. The results were consistent across all five tests: two lines on the strip, indicating a positive result. Toups couldn't believe it. In her experience, 44-year-olds were on the verge of becoming grandparents, not first-time parents.

A doctor's appointment in early June confirmed that she was approximately eight weeks pregnant, with a due date in January 2024. It felt like a twist of fate. Toups had recently met her partner, the first person with whom she could envision co-parenting. When he expressed his desire to have children, she was honest about her doubts regarding her ability to conceive.

Her joy was undeniable.

"It just felt right. It was like a complete, immediate 180-degree turn, just like that," Toups expressed. "There was no question about whether or not I wanted to do it. It was strange. It still feels a little strange."

An increasing number of Americans are choosing to embark on parenthood later in life, having their first child in their late 20s, 30s, and even 40s.

According to federal data, there has been a consistent rise in the number of older individuals becoming first-time parents over the past two decades. In 2021, the average age for first-time births reached a record high of 27.3. The proportion of individuals in their 30s and 40s giving birth has steadily increased since 2000. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention supports this trend.
