HEALTH

ðŸ‘‰As the saying goes, health is the root of all happiness. Health is the most valuable asset of a human being. A person's happiness depends on their health. Money, success, fame, honor, influence and prestige are all meaningless to a man of broken health.

REPORT: The demand for psychologists in the United States is surpassing the available supply due to the significant prevalence of mental illness among Americans.

According to a recent survey conducted by the American Psychological Association (APA), over half of American psychologists have no availability for new patients as mental health issues continue to rise in the post-COVID era. The survey revealed that approximately 56% of psychologists are unable to accommodate new patients due to the overwhelming demand for their services. Furthermore, the average wait time for appointments is at least three months or even longer, with 40% of psychologists reporting an increase in waitlisted appointments over the past year.

Vaile Wright, a psychologist and senior director of Health Care Innovation at the APA, expressed concern over the current situation, stating that the demand for mental health services far exceeds the available supply. This imbalance poses a significant challenge in addressing the mental health crisis in the country. The survey also highlighted that the duration of treatment required by patients has increased over the past three years. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a lasting impact on individuals, leading to a surge in mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, sleep disturbances, and addiction.

Wright emphasized that trauma experienced during the pandemic can manifest in various ways, including the loss of loved ones, grief, personal illness, and the repercussions of hospitalizations. She further explained that the true impact of the stress endured during this period often becomes apparent when things start to calm down.

The report also revealed that approximately 36% of psychologists reported feeling burnt out, although this is a slight decrease from the previous year's figure of 41%. However, two-thirds of psychologists stated that they effectively practice self-care to combat burnout, and nearly half rely on peer support.

In conclusion, the survey conducted by the APA highlights the significant challenges faced by American psychologists in meeting the increasing demand for mental health services. The long wait times and limited availability for new patients underscore the urgent need for sustainable solutions to address the mental health crisis in the country.
